How did you decide on your profession?

From a young age, I was always fascinated with the sciences. As I grew older my interest in health careers continued to pique, and by the time I was in high school, I knew that medicine was my calling. I initially thought I wanted to be a dentist. I went as far as participating in a summer enrichment program during my junior year of high school at Marquette University in Milwaukee, WI for students interested in Dental Medicine. I will forever be grateful for that opportunity as it provided me my first experience being away from home, opened my eyes to a world much larger than the small South Texas town I grew up in, and helped me realize that unlike the elf in the old Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer special, I in fact did not want to be a Dentist. I spent my senior year of high school and first couple years of undergrad exploring other health career programs including nursing school, medical school, and ultimately physician assistant school. I decided at the time that the physician assistant model was the right fit for me after visiting, interviewing, and shadowing a couple of PAs in my hometown of Roma, TX.

What is your favorite part of your profession?

Overall the best part of my chosen profession is the fact that I get to help people, oftentimes when they are in their most vulnerable state. There is an enormous amount of trust that a patient must share with you as a medical professional in order for you to help them. This is not only great responsibility but a privilege. I have had the opportunity to work in different areas of specialty within medicine, but the specialty that I have found to be my true passion is Dermatology with a particular emphasis on the aesthetic aspect of the specialty. Because Dermatology is such a visual specialty and patients can literally see their skin conditions getting improving, it is one of the most rewarding areas of medicine in which I have practiced. As a dermatology provider, you have the opportunity to have a profound impact on a patient’s life and self-esteem. It is absolutely awe-inspiring to see a teenager’s confidence level change over a few short months of treatment for their acne. Or finding a dangerous skin cancer on someone and catching it early enough that their lives are changed forever. Or being able to rewind the clock and provide a more youthful look for someone with a variety of cosmetic procedures.

Do you as a male believe self-love and care are important?

Absolutely! 100%... I believe self-care and self-love are of paramount importance when it comes to leading a healthy lifestyle. Along with eating right, exercising, maintaining close relationships with family and friends, taking care of yourself should be a top priority. Doing things for yourself that bring you joy and fulfill your life helps you become a better version of yourself.

When did you learn the importance of self-love?

I’m still learning about self-love. I’ve tried to incorporate different aspects of self-love and care into my life, over the years. Some attempts have been successful, while others like learning how to properly meditate have taken a bit more time.

How do you promote self-love in others?

I think self-love is something that someone needs to find for themselves. I believe we all have challenges in our lives that present themselves at different stages. We may each aspire to incorporate self-love strategies for our overall well being, but I feel it’s these challenging moments that often motivate us to follow through. That being said, I use encouragement and support as my way of promoting self-love in others.

What does the Glam By Sam motto ( “Find your glamour within”) mean to you?

I think finding one’s own glamour within can mean so many things. For me, it means sharing your gifts, be the light that shines ever so brightly in the lives of all those you encounter.

How do you continue to find your glamour within on a daily basis?

I feel the best way to find your glamour within on a daily basis is by surrounding yourself with those who mean the most to you. Be that your family, your friends, your co-workers, and pets. They are the ones who acknowledge your gifts; they are the ones who see your light.

During the COVID 19 pandemic, who or what do you turn to as a way to maintain positivity, clarity, and motivation?

I would have to say a prayer. I’m not going to tell you I’m a deeply religious man, but during these troubling and uncertain times, it is easy to become overwhelmed or anxious. I find myself praying a lot more than I normally have in the past. I believe He is listening to my prayers and that’s all I need to remain positive, maintain my clarity, and regain my motivation.

Lastly, I will ask you to leave us with some words of wisdom (your favorite quote, words you live by, your favorite bible verse, etc.) and why those words mean so much to you.

Don’t tell me the sky's the limit when there are footprints on the moon. -Paul Brandt

This quote started out as a joke on our weekly podcast, Plastic Surgery Untold, shameless plug… My castmate Travis Osborn apparently likes to use the saying “The sky's the limit” pretty often, so Dr. Johnny Franco, who you’ve interviewed before, thought it would be funny if we used this quote against Travis during one of our shows. He set it up throughout the show, even getting Travis to say “the sky's the limit” at one point.

It got me thinking about the quote; however, and it really began to resonate with me. Why to settle for the sky when there is so much more you can do and so much further you can go to attain your dreams and goals if you’re focused and your mind is set. The bit worked to perfection by the way. Travis was left speechless and we all had a great laugh over it.

..............................................................................................................................................................

These are amazing words to live by, Thank you Gilbert for sharing your message of Finding your GLAMOUR within and being true to who you are.

XOXO,

Sam💋
