How did you decide on your profession?

Making a career choice I think is hard for most people as it was for me. It was an evolving process that started with a love for science, but still wanting to be able to interact with people and having a hands-on profession. It seemed that medicine was a good fit that balanced all of these goals. However, I didn’t know that I wanted to go into plastic surgery until later in life. I thought initially that I would be a transplant surgeon as the surgeries are intriguing and life changing for people.

As I continued my education I slowly started to fall in love with plastic surgery as it allowed me to help people reach their goals in a different aspect.

It also allowed me to combine a scientific basis with an artistic twist. It is this winding road that helped me get to my current profession.

What is your favorite part of your profession?

As a plastic surgeon I believe that we get a unique insight into the life of our patients. They typically come to us with their biggest insecurities. Most of my patients have thought about their procedure for years before ever coming to see me for a consultation.

To be able to help them along this transformation journey is priceless.

It is amazing how many random emails, letters or post-cards that I receive from patients years later expressing how happy they are with their transformation. To be able to bring that type of joy to patients is the favorite part of my profession. It is those type of interactions that makes the long journey into medicine worthwhile for me.

Do you as a male believe self-love and care is important?

I truly believe that self-love is important for everyone. Males are included in the need for self-love. In the current Covid-19 situation I think self-love is more important than ever before. It is easy to feel isolated and to be consumed with the world wide crisis and forget about ourselves.

It is important for everyone to remember that if you don’t take care of yourself you are not going to be able to take care of the loved ones around you.

I see this for myself as a male and in my patients. We have a wide variety of patients that come into our office and that includes males.

All of us want or exterior to match our interior beauty!

When did you learn the importance of self-love?

Self-love is an interesting topic as I don’t know that well all understand and appreciate how important it is to our overall health. I also think many people learn it and forget it.

We all need constant reminders about the importance of self-love.

As we face new challenges in our lives it is easy to forget about our own personal well-being. I also truly believe that self-love evolves overtime as our careers, personal relationships and health continue to evolve.

It is important to take time to re-evaluate your personal situation constantly to make sure that you are not neglecting yourself, as you can only spread love if you love yourself first.

What do you continue to do to promote and encourage self-love to others?

Personally, as a plastic surgeon I think this is an integral part of my daily job.

It is my responsibility to remind our patients how incredible they truly are and that any surgery that we do is only the icing on the cake.

It is easy for us to be much too hard on ourselves and as a medical profession I feel like I have the unique opportunity and responsibility to talk to my patients about self-love and how fabulous they are currently.

What does the Glam by Sam motto (“Find your glamour within”) mean to you?

Finding your glamour within means to me finding what makes you special.  All of us being unique and different is what makes the world such a fun place. We all need to embrace our unique qualities.

This is true glamour and I believe that everyone has it. Some of us just forget that it is inside of us!

How do you continue to find your glamour within on a daily basis?

Finding your personal glam is probably one of the hardest things for most of us to do. Most people depend on external positivity to remember how incredible they are personally. In this day of social distancing, it is sometimes hard to have our usual cheerleaders!

I personally on my drive to the office everyday try to think of one positive difference I did for someone else the day before as I believe my personal glamour is being beacon of hope for our patients and the people around me.

If you really look closely, most overnight successes took a long time. – Steve Jobs
